Alleged murderer Luigi Mangione, accused in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, made a court appearance for the second day of a pretrial hearing aiming to prevent New York prosecutors from using crucial evidence linking him to the crime. Surveillance footage of the killing in Manhattan and his subsequent arrest at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania were presented during the hearing.
Mangione’s defense attorneys are seeking to suppress statements he allegedly made and items seized from him during the arrest, including a 9mm handgun believed to be the murder weapon. The arrest occurred at a McDonald’s 230 miles away from the crime scene, prompted by suspicion from customers who likened Mangione to the wanted shooter.
Altoona Police Officer Joseph Detwiler testified that he responded to the tip without using lights and sirens, initially doubting the identification. The case hinges on whether Mangione felt free to leave before his arrest and the legality of searching his belongings without a warrant.
Mangione, a well-educated individual from a prosperous Maryland family, maintains his innocence against both state and federal murder charges, facing potential life imprisonment and the death penalty, respectively. Trial dates are pending, with the current hearing focusing solely on the state case.
Prosecutors have yet to present arguments supporting the admission of contested evidence, while federal prosecutors assert that the search of Mangione’s backpack was justified for safety reasons and that his statements were voluntary.
