Poundland, a popular budget retailer, recently announced the closure of almost 150 shops and the elimination of 2,200 jobs as part of its restructuring efforts. The company’s store count has now reduced to 651 from approximately 800, with its workforce decreasing from 14,200 to about 12,000. Additionally, Poundland shut down two warehouses located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, as part of its restructuring process.
Last year, Poundland was acquired by investment firm Gordon Brothers for a nominal fee of £1 to avoid administration. The company’s rescue plan, which included store closures, was approved by the High Court in August. Poundland recently confirmed the completion of its restructuring program but emphasized that there is still significant work ahead to regain stability.
The company mentioned that any future closures would be part of standard business lease events expected from a retailer with an extensive store network. Poundland reported a 2.9% drop in like-for-like underlying sales for the quarter ending on December 28 as it reduced prices to align with its discount-oriented approach. However, it noted a 2% increase in comparable store sales by volume during the same period.
In the first quarter, Poundland’s underlying earnings increased by £8.4 million to £17.3 million, meeting its expectations. Managing director Barry Williams acknowledged the progress made in re-energizing the business with lower prices and a more focused product offering. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to enhance product ranges and pricing simplicity across all departments.
Poundland revamped its pricing strategy by reintroducing a straightforward £1, £2, and £3 grocery pricing model across its UK stores, with the majority of grocery items priced at £1. The company also discontinued certain categories like frozen foods and selected chilled ranges, as well as terminated its online operations. Furthermore, Poundland is reintroducing its in-house designed Pep&Co clothing to UK and Ireland stores, with 90% of items priced below £10, available from the following week.
To highlight its value offerings, Poundland is launching a nationwide advertising campaign next week. The company aims to emphasize everyday value across its product ranges to attract more customers.
