Naomi Osaka Withdraws from Australian Open Due to Injury

Date:

Naomi Osaka has made the tough decision to withdraw from the Australian Open just hours before her scheduled third-round match. As the 16th seed, she was set to face Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena, but now the Australian qualifier will progress to the next round.

In a statement on Instagram, Osaka explained that she needed to address a physical issue that arose after her previous match. Despite her excitement to continue in the tournament, she expressed disappointment at having to halt her run to avoid further harm and ensure a swift return to the court. She thanked her supporters and team for their unwavering backing.

Speaking to the media via Tennis Australia, Osaka revealed that the injury she experienced had troubled her before, and while she attempted to play through it, the pain escalated during warm-up. She emphasized the need for additional tests, especially considering the changes her body has undergone post-pregnancy.

This marks Osaka’s second consecutive withdrawal from a tournament, following her exit from the Japan Open last year due to a left thigh injury. Earlier this year, she represented Japan at the United Cup in Perth, where health concerns affected her performance. Despite facing challenges, Osaka remains focused on taking each day and match as they come.

Osaka’s journey at the Australian Open ended prematurely, but her resolve to overcome setbacks and return stronger remains steadfast.
