University of Waterloo PhD student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, alongside his colleagues, clinched the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their innovative work on creating a splash-free urinal. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical take on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, applaud distinctive and imaginative research endeavors within academia. Thurairajah fondly recalls the moment his mentor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the exciting news of their victory.
The team explored various urinal designs, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia, in pursuit of the perfect splash-free solution. According to Thurairajah, the Nautilus design proved superior in reducing splashes and ease of maintenance compared to the Cornucopia model. At the awards ceremony in Zurich, the researchers sported bright yellow raincoats, prepared to bask in the admiration of their fellow unconventional scientists.
Despite the humorous nature of their project, Thurairajah emphasizes the practical benefits of their urinal research in enhancing public restroom facilities. Published in the journal PNAS Nexus last year, their findings aim to create more inviting and hygienic public spaces. Additionally, other Canadian researchers received accolades at the ceremony for diverse studies, including behaviors of upper-class individuals and innovative uses of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing.
Organized by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, the Ig Nobel Awards relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns for attendees. Thurairajah stresses the international collaboration within the scientific community, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and global contributions. This shift ensured that scientists worldwide could participate and benefit from each other’s work, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect.
