Botched Execution in Alabama: Inmate Engulfed in Flames

Date:

An inmate on death row experienced a horrific botched execution when a strap on the electric chair broke, engulfing him in flames and emitting a stench of burning flesh. John Louis Evans III, 33, was executed in Alabama in 1983 for the murder of pawnbroker Edward Nassar in 1977.

Moments before his death, Evans was jovial in a holding cell near the death chamber and expressed readiness for his fate if the Supreme Court did not halt the execution. He was secured in an electric chair known as ‘Yellow Mama,’ and during the initial 30-second jolt of 1,900 volts, a strap on his left leg electrode snapped, causing sparks and flames.

Smoke and sparks poured out from under the hood covering his head, filling the chamber with the smell of burning flesh. Despite initially surviving the first jolt, doctors found his heartbeat still present. Subsequently, a second 30-second surge caused flames to lick at his head, with smoke emanating from his leg and electrode cap.

During the ordeal, Evans exhibited violent physical reactions, clenching his fists as if in agony. His attorney, Russell Canan, pleaded for the execution to cease, denouncing it as cruel punishment and torture disguised as justice. Despite pleas, Governor George Wallace did not intervene.

Evans was subjected to a third round of electrocution before finally ceasing to breathe. He was declared dead at 8:44 pm, marking a distressing 14 minutes from the start of the execution. Prison officials and guards labeled the incident as barbaric, noting the unprecedented failure of the electric chair.

The incident sparked a heated debate, with opponents of the death penalty citing Evans’ ordeal as evidence of the inhumanity of electrocution. Eddie Nassar, the 73-year-old father of Evans’ victim, expressed the necessity of upholding laws and justified the execution as a form of justice and deterrence against future harm.

This execution brought to light the flaws and controversies surrounding the use of electrocution as a method of capital punishment.
