“Man Sentenced to 9 Years for “Depraved” Attack”

Date:

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison after a judge described his actions as “misogynistic” and labeled the attack as “depraved.” The defendant, who committed the assault when he was 21 years old, pleaded guilty to causing serious harm to a woman in a city center flat on March 6, 2024.

The court was informed that the defendant had 15 prior convictions and was out on bail when he carried out the brutal attack. Judge Pauline Codd imposed a 10-year prison sentence with the final year suspended, emphasizing the severity of the assault. The sentence was backdated to reflect time already spent in custody.

The incident came to light when Garda Colm Carroll and a colleague responded to a disturbance in the apartment building around 8pm. They saw several men fleeing the scene, leading to the detention of three suspects, including the defendant. The victim was found on a balcony, bleeding heavily from her genital area.

Emergency services rushed the victim to St. James’ Hospital, where she received medical treatment. A bloodstained knife was recovered from the crime scene. Following the arrest of the perpetrator, his phone was confiscated, and a voice message was retrieved from Snapchat, indicating his involvement in the attack.

CCTV footage presented in court showed the movement of the men to a different apartment block nearby. They arrived at the victim’s complex armed with knives, wearing masks and gloves. Medical reports revealed the extent of the victim’s injuries, indicating a challenging recovery ahead.

The defendant’s legal counsel acknowledged his client’s guilty plea and difficult upbringing, citing his mental health conditions. The defendant expressed remorse for his actions and is undergoing rehabilitation programs while in custody.

During sentencing, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the attack, noting the defendant’s intent and prior criminal history. The court recognized the long-term impact on the victim’s health and well-being, describing the assault as particularly heinous.
