Canada’s lead trade negotiator with the United States is challenging various assertions made by American officials regarding the breakdown of trade discussions last week. Specifically, the Canadian side disputes claims that they introduced last-minute demands on automotive issues and that U.S. negotiators showed no interest in French language discoverability regulations.
During an exclusive interview with CBC’s “The House,” Janice Charette emphasized that Canada consistently addressed the entirety of its automotive sector throughout the negotiations. This contradicts statements by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who alleged that Canadians only raised concerns about tariff relief for specific truck models as a tactic to derail the deal.
Charette refrained from directly contradicting Lutnick but clarified that the automotive issue was raised multiple times earlier in the week. She highlighted that discussions on tariff relief for various autos, including Ford’s F-series pickups and GM’s Silverado, were ongoing from Monday through Thursday.
Charette emphasized that the aim was to secure a trade deal that offered the lowest tariffs on specific goods for enhanced market access across key sectors. The dispute has led to a back-and-forth exchange between both nations over the reasons behind the collapsed trade deal, with differing perspectives on who was responsible.
Moving forward, Charette expressed a willingness to resume negotiations with the U.S., provided that any agreement respects Canadian sovereignty and economic interests. The Canadian government remains committed to exploring mutually beneficial trade terms while safeguarding its core sectors.
Regarding contentious issues such as French language discoverability rules and restrictions on future trade agreements, Charette maintained that Canada stood firm on protecting its language and cultural interests.
