Osee Podolsky, the general manager of Podolski Honey Farms in Ethelbert, Manitoba, expressed concerns about the impact of the newly imposed 50% tariffs by the United States on Canadian goods, particularly natural honey. The family-operated farm, established by Podolsky’s grandfather over 70 years ago, predominantly ships its honey to customers in the U.S. Podolsky stated that the tariffs make it economically unfeasible to continue serving their usual American clientele, jeopardizing the farm’s viability as approximately 90% of their honey is sold in the U.S.
The tariffs were implemented by the U.S. early Saturday following unsuccessful trade negotiations between Canadian and American representatives. Prime Minister Mark Carney disclosed that the negotiation breakdown occurred when the U.S. introduced new terms that were deemed economically unsound and unfair by Canada. The U.S. negotiators raised concerns regarding Canada’s French language protections, such as bilingual product labeling requirements, and proposed limitations on Canada’s ability to engage in trade agreements with other nations.
Carney emphasized that Canada refused to compromise its sovereignty or undermine key industries, leading to the decision to walk away from the unfavorable deal proposed by the U.S. In response, Canada plans to retaliate with dollar-for-dollar tariffs set to be enforced post-Labour Day.
