This novel continues the narrative in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, a familiar backdrop from her earlier works such as “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer.” In a recent newsletter, Fortune shared her excitement about purchasing a lakeside cottage near Barry’s Bay, fulfilling a long-held aspiration since selling her family’s lakeside home.
The protagonist of “Only in Summer,” Eleanor Florek, affectionately known as Ellie, mirrors Fortune’s dream of owning property in Barry’s Bay. Ellie, a relative of Charlie and Sam from the previous Barry’s Bay stories, returns to her childhood town with the intention of buying her own place. However, her plans are disrupted when a neighbor decides to demolish a nearby house to build a grand residence, setting the stage for a potential unexpected romance by the lake.
Fortune, a prominent writer and editor based in Toronto, has an impressive portfolio that includes “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.” Notably, “Meet Me at the Lake” was a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024, championed by fashion influencer Mirian Njoh, marking a significant milestone as the first romance novel featured on the show.
Furthermore, the adaptation of Fortune’s works into visual media has garnered attention. “Every Summer After” has been transformed into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” which has been renewed for a second season based on “One Golden Summer.” Additionally, Netflix Canada is gearing up to adapt “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode series, expanding Fortune’s literary universe to the screen.
