Former President Donald Trump has announced a significant escalation in his initiative to deport a large number of migrants, including those with legal status in the US, following the tragic incident in Washington DC.
The violent attack, resulting in the death of one National Guard member and leaving another critically injured, was reportedly carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the US after the fall of Kabul in 2021. Lakanwal sought asylum last year and was granted it in April, during Trump’s presidency.
Trump has shifted blame to his predecessor, Joe Biden, for the decision to assist Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban regime, allowing them temporary refuge in the US while they applied for asylum. In a series of late-night social media posts on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that his response would not be limited to those directly involved in the shooting but would extend to any immigrant groups he perceives as undermining American values.
In a controversial statement, Trump called for a “REVERSE MIGRATION” as the solution to the situation and expressed Thanksgiving wishes to all except those he accused of opposing American principles. He targeted the Somali community in Minnesota, announcing a temporary halt to migration from certain regions while emphasizing the removal of individuals deemed detrimental to the country.
Trump declared the elimination of federal benefits for non-citizens and warned that even citizens could lose their status if they disrupt domestic peace. He expanded his deportation plan to include any foreign national considered a burden, security threat, or incompatible with Western civilization, including those with permanent residency (“green card”) status.
Despite lacking evidence, Trump claimed that the majority of foreign-born US residents are dependent on welfare or have criminal backgrounds. He criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for allegedly allowing Somalian dominance in the state, although the Somali population is a minority in Minnesota.
Furthermore, Trump attacked Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, questioning her immigration history and citizenship status. Contrary to his claims, Omar legally sought asylum with her family in 1995 and became a US citizen in 2000. She was not married at the time of her naturalization.
