The world’s largest aircraft, playfully nicknamed the “flying bum” due to its unique design, boasts the remarkable ability to land without the need for a traditional runway. Priced at £60 million, this extravagant “mega airship” features luxurious double bedrooms and an onboard bar, promising to revolutionize air travel.
Manufactured by Hybrid Air Vehicles, the Airlander 10 is envisioned to operate a commercial fleet by 2029, aiming to soar through the skies at an impressive 92-meter length, making it the largest aircraft globally and reshaping the travel industry.
The aircraft’s innovative design allows it to access remote locations typically only reachable by helicopters, as it can take off and land on various terrains including grass, gravel, sand, marsh, or even water, requiring minimal runway distances.
George, the company’s representative, highlighted the aircraft’s versatility in landing on open spaces without paved runways, eliminating infrastructure barriers and offering the flexibility to explore inaccessible areas. The Airlander 10 has the potential to accommodate up to 100 passengers on long-distance journeys.
Although the Airlander 10 has humorously been dubbed the “flying bum,” the company plans to refine its appearance for commercial aviation, moving away from its initial design. With no operational prototypes currently, the company has developed mock-ups of the passenger compartment suspended beneath the helium-filled structure.
Following a previous test flight in 2016 that caused traffic congestion in Bedford, the manufacturer, HAV, has secured a construction site in Doncaster to build an enhanced Airlander 10 in the next 12 to 18 months. The approval process by the Civil Aviation Authority is anticipated before full-scale production begins in South Yorkshire, potentially manufacturing up to two dozen units annually by 2030.
Promising a more comfortable flying experience compared to conventional airplanes, the Airlander 10 cruises at 3,000 meters without the need for air-pressurization, offering a peaceful journey at a maximum speed of 80mph. Despite being slower than modern jets, it boasts impressive endurance, capable of covering 4,000 miles in a single trip.
In a bid to be environmentally conscious, HAV has joined forces with ZeroAvia to equip the Airlander 10 with hydrogen-electric engines, significantly reducing emissions compared to traditional kerosene-powered planes. This partnership aims to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future in air travel.
