In Prince George, B.C., the Famous Players Six theatre faced a challenge when they did not receive the promotional posters for the latest Spider-Man movie, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” To address this issue, the theater enlisted the help of Drake Landon, an employee and artist.
Due to a shipping error, the theater never received the official posters. In response, Landon, a 19-year-old employee, was asked by his manager to create a replacement poster inspired by the internet meme character Spooderman. Spooderman is a parody of Marvel’s Spider-Man depicted in a crude MS Paint style that originated around 2012.
Although Landon offered to draw a traditional Spider-Man, he agreed to create a Spooderman poster in line with the character’s “Brand New Day” design. Beneath his hand-drawn poster, Landon added a simple note apologizing for the absence of the official posters and any inconvenience caused.
The makeshift Spooderman poster caught the attention of movie-goers like Adam Woodrow, who found it impressive during his visit to the theater with his son, Rogan. Rogan took a photo of Landon next to the poster and shared it on local community platforms. The online posts about Landon and the Spooderman poster quickly gained popularity, receiving thousands of likes across various platforms, including the Marvel Studios subreddit with over 54,000 upvotes.
Despite the praise he received, Landon expressed humility, attributing the idea to the original Spooderman meme creator. He mentioned his preference for drawing robots, intricate machines, and weapons in his free time.
Landon’s father, Craig Landon, expressed pride in his son’s creativity and the recognition he received for his artwork. Although the theater plans to replace Landon’s creation with the official “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” poster, they intend to find a new display location for the hand-drawn rendition within the theater.
Looking ahead, Landon hopes to produce prints of his now-famous poster for personal satisfaction and potential future endeavors.
